“Conversations” with LaRoc Dewa

Jaymz Nylon:  Would you please give the reader a little family background i.e., Place of Birth, Current City you are based in etc.

LaRoc Dewa:  Born in Durban, South Africa.. raised in Pretoria/Johannesburg, currently living in Sydney Australia.

Jaymz Nylon:  What are your short- and long-term goals?

LaRoc Dewa: Short term goals as a musician, is to create electronic music that stands through time. Long term. Goals as a musician, is to possibly turn my passion into a steady income.

Jaymz Nylon:  Passions and/or interest aside from music?

LaRoc Dewa:  I enjoy videography, cooking and of course dancing!

Jaymz Nylon:  Who has inspired you and why? It could be Artists, Bands, Activists, Politicians, Family Members, Teachers etc…

LaRoc Dewa:  Musically, I have two fundamental inspirations and one is my label mate and co-producer A-FRYK-YA…without his introduction to quality house music, there would be no LaRoc Dewa and 2nd is Maya Jane Coles, who with her sound influenced my finer tastes in house music, there are many others as well of course. I would say  my mother as my inspiration outside of music. A single mum to 2 boys and managed to provide us with more than what we required in life.

Jaymz Nylon:  What message or advice would you like to give to music consumers/fans?

LaRoc Dewa:  Follow the feeling, your instincts are truer than you imagine. Shut out the outside noise and trust what moves you on the inside.

Jaymz Nylon:  Would you say that you lead a well-balanced life if so, how do you stay centered?  If not, what changes would you make to achieve your desired result? Examples: Read more, exercise, better sleeping habits, more time with loved ones etc…

LaRoc Dewa:  Wow, complex question haha. I dont think im the right person for this question but there’s a song by kendrick lamar called “The heart pt. 2” and the introduction kind of typifies what I need, water and music… thats all I need. Everything else is a bonus.

Jaymz Nylon:  Name 3 or more of your favorite self-produced tracks. Artist Name “Track Name” Label.

LaRoc Dewa: I think the upcoming LaRoc Dewa track on nylon called pick up is my favourite. One of my very 1st tracks I produced that has never been released called rollercoaster…and my remix for Afrykya in time on nylon is what im vibing right now.

Jaymz Nylon:  Name 3 or more of your favorite tracks produced by others.  Artist Name “Track Name” Label.

LaRoc Dewa: Like I said Maya Jane Coles has been a big influence, so I would say “The high life” on 2020Vision, a remix by Kenny larkin of radio slaves “I dont need a cure for this” on Rekids and stimming remix of Manuel Tur’s Vabanque on poker flat recordings.

Jaymz Nylon:     Where would you like to live and why, City, Beach or Rural (Farm Area)?

LaRoc Dewa:  Haha that’s a fun question, I think beach. I was born in a coastal town, so I feel some connection with the ocean and im starting to get pretty tired of the city lately.

Jaymz Nylon:  What is more important, the sharing of music or the format in which music is shared?

LaRoc Dewa:  Sharing of music is definitely the more important, I grew in the era of CDs, I know, not that long ago..  but the importance of music was so different, we have too much access to too much music these days.. I remember, itching for a friends 12 track cd for 1 song that I really wanted… now you go on the net and within 5 minutes you have 30 tracks ready to download…which in the end I question if I really want all of them.
